Chapter 16

Boredom was the real enemy in a way. The zombies weren’t a daily threat as long as we stayed barricaded in the building. By week two I’d read every book I owned and watched every movie. While the power and water still worked, to all our delights, the majority of the internet had gone down after several days.

Board games became the primary means of passing time and even Grace would happily play. Risk was the favorite at the beginning but eventually tempers flared as Jeremy accused the group of working against him. Monopoly came next with the same inevitable result. Finally Ticket to Ride, a train board game, became our go to entertainment but even that quickly grew old.

The bigger problem by the beginning of week three was overall morale. We’d all been stuck inside the entire time and the good food was running low. If tempers were already rising with us eating the last of the canned goods I didn’t want to think about what it would be like if we got down to just rice and beans. We needed a supply run and it was going to be up to me to do it.

Granted I wasn’t minding the situation too much. Ashley and Delyn had been alternating nights they would spend with me much to my delight. Delyn was beginning to really let her freak out, not that she ever really kept it in check. Even Ashley who was typically more reserved was slowly getting kinkier and kinkier.

Still it was becoming difficult to enjoy with all the worrying I was doing. Grace wouldn’t last long without a healthy diet, rice and beans wouldn’t cut it. Also there was the Jeremy problem. He was becoming more unpredictable by the day. In the morning he’d be cheery and by midday he’d lash out at someone.

Most worrying to me was that Delyn and Ashley started to complain that he would knock on their door multiple times at night after the other had left. His visits were always odd like asking if their water still worked. When it did he would leave only to return minutes later saying that his worked again. On one occasion he even asked if they had an extra sock for a project he was working on which annoyed them both greatly. Maybe some fresh food would get him out of whatever rut he was in.

I devised a resupply plan one night while Delyn was sleeping beside me. Our building was connected to six or seven others and by lowering myself from our roof, which was the highest, I could stay on the roofs of the other buildings. Two buildings down was the Paducah Country Store. It was a mom and pop convenience store nestled into the downtown area that served as a quick stop for snacks in the past. With any luck they had been closed and locked up when it all went down.

I had an ax in my van and could hopefully bust in through the roof and never be exposed to the gnawing mouths of the zombies.
